"Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast..." (Hebrews 6:19)

The anchor was a common figure for hope in the ancient world; here it especially reminds us that we are anchored to something firm, something to hold onto in times of trouble. Unseen, our God anchors us, does not hold us down, but secures us in hope which is the ultimate expression of freedom.
